Geometric rabbit and red heart on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A faceted rabbit head is drawn in bold black outlines with stippled grey fill, angled like a folded paper shape. Below it sits a solid red heart split into flat geometric planes outlined in black. The design is set against plain pale skin, with a yellow sleeve at the right edge of the frame.

The roof of Harrowcleve came down in the wind of the year the bell cracked, so the widow Maud Teague moved her stool to the one dry corner of the upper hall and sat there with a ledger sheet on her knee. Her son Ned had gone east to the fen villages to sell eels and had not written. She had no ink to spare for letters, so she folded instead.

She folded hares. A hare folded from one square sheet, with the ears pulled up sharp and the body faceted like a stone, would go in a coat pocket and not crease. She showed the carter's girl how to crimp the belly flat, and every second morning the girl took one down the causeway road to the milestone, where the carters would pass it along. Maud did not know if any of them reached him. She kept folding them anyway, because her hands needed something to do.
In the third winter a hare came back up the causeway in the mouth of a grey dog, wet and soft, and the dog would not give it up until the girl bargained it away with a heel of bread. When Maud opened it she found the sheet was not her paper. It was printed on one side with a fen merchant's tally, and folded on the other into a heart, split along its ridges, the point at the bottom. Beneath the heart, in pencil, someone had written: Still here. Ned had learned the trick from a carter who had learned it from her.
Maud dyed the heart with madder from the garden wall, pressed it flat under the ledger, and set it on the sill where the swallows could see. Then she took up a fresh square and began the next hare, because the road was still open and the cold was not yet done with them.
