Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a faceted helmet with a small antenna on the inner forearm.

Geometric helmet on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a helmet with a domed crown built from triangular facets, a horizontal band, and angled side panels. The shading is created with dense stippled dots, and the helmet has a thin upright antenna on its left side. It sits centrally on a pale forearm against a softly blurred dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Fourteenth day of snow on the Gallow Col, and the mules have stopped complaining, which means they have stopped eating too. Ruth from the sheep station walked up with the bread this morning and said the lads in the valley are talking about the helmet again. They say it came down with the thaw in the year the bridge at Scaur washed out, and that whoever wore it was never seen going back over the top.

I went down to the scree hut after supper with a lamp and a bad temper. The thing was wedged under the shelf where Tomas kept his candles, black and dull, its dome cut into small triangles like a stone somebody had spent a whole winter faceting. A thin rod stands up off the crown on one side, bent at the tip like a fishing line caught on a branch. I turned it over. Inside it smelled of tallow and old iron, and there was a dent above the left eye the shape of a boot heel.

I tried it on, which I am not proud of. Through the slits the pass looked sharper, every edge of the ridge drawn in clean lines, and for an hour I could hear the wind sorting itself into notes. Then I took it off and the wind was only wind again, and I had a headache like a sawn plank.

I have put it back under the shelf, rod up, as I found it. Tomorrow I will send Ruth down with the bread and a note asking her to tell the valley that the pass is shut and the helmet is staying where it is. I have written that twice now so I will remember to mean it.
