Geometric hourglass on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A geometric hourglass sits on the inner forearm, with a black-outlined upper bulb patterned in pink radiating lines and a lower bulb filled with green, teal and red shapes and dots. Two black drops with red tips hang beside the hourglass and one below it. The tattoo is shown in a tattoo shop setting, with framed pictures on the wall behind and a black chair edge at the right.

Dear Tomasz,

The frost came in on Tuesday and has not left the yard since. I broke the ice on the trough this morning with the back of the spade, the way Dad used to, and the ewes crowded in to drink as if I'd personally carried the water up from the well. The lower field is white to the wall. Mrs Pryce's ram got through the gap by the orchard again, so on Friday I'll be mending wire in gloves that are no use at all.

The hourglass is still on the dresser, the one you turned upside down the night before you left so the sand would have to start over. I never worked out why you did that. Dad said it was superstition, but you always said it was so the old hours had nowhere to go. Last week the upper bulb was nearly empty, a thin pink fan of light through the glass when the lamp caught it, and I sat with it for an hour before I could bring myself to turn it back.

I've decided to sell the Jersey heifers in March. Mr Hollis says the price will hold. I'll keep the hens, the two old dogs and the grey mare, because she won't go to anyone who doesn't talk to her first.

Write when the post can get through. Tell me what colour the sea is over there. I want to know if anything in the world is still bright.

Love, Nell
