Geometric owl on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A faceted owl is drawn in bold black outline, with its wings and body split into angular geometric planes. Stippled dotwork shading creates gradual darkening across the body and wings, while the lighter areas stay as bare skin. The owl fills most of the frame against a plain background, and the tattoo is in black ink only.

The owl came down the ventilation shaft of Harrow Deep at dusk, folded from a single sheet of hull plate, and it did not flap so much as click its facets into place when it landed on the rail beside my bench. Nobody folds like that anymore. The signal-makers on the Tallow Ring used to pleat their messages into paper birds, and when the Ring went dark the knack went with them. I had only ever seen one in the archive vaults, under a sheet of grey glass.

Its shadows were not paint. Someone had pressed rust dust through a mesh of pinholes, dot by dot, so the wings darkened gradually toward the joints while the breast stayed bare as polished metal. I ran my thumb across the shading and it came away gritty. Caught in the seam of the left wing was a strip of ration tape, and on it, in square capitals: THE LOWER GATE OPENS AT THREE.

Mirelle would have told me to leave it alone. She had spent eleven years keeping that gate shut and calling it peace. I took my cutters, my lamp and the owl, and climbed the shaft the way the air had come down it, past the sealed hatches and the dead fans.

At the top the air tasted of cold iron. The owl's bare breast caught my lamp and held the light, a clean plane where nothing had settled in years. I unfolded its right wing, and a second line of tape stuck to the inside fold read: LOOK UNDER THE DUST.
