Ouija planchette and hand holding crystals on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a heart-shaped planchette with a single eye and the word OUIJA, above a hand gripping a cluster of pink crystals with a beaded bracelet at the wrist. The linework is bold and outlined in black, with solid fills and simple shading. Strong reds, pinks, teal, green and yellow dominate the design, which fills the forearm against a blurred shop background.

They say the old keep at Harrowgate stood empty for a hundred years because of the board in the cellar. It was a heart of dark walnut, no bigger than a hand, with a single painted eye staring up from its middle and letters around the rim that nobody living could read by candlelight. The lord's steward carried it down the spiral stair the winter his wife died, and nobody went looking for it after.

Mara Penrose climbed the hill in March with a sack of salt and a grievance. Her brother Tom had gone onto the moor after the sheep and not come back, and the constable had stopped looking on the fourth day. She found the cellar by the smell of wet stone, lit a stub of candle, and rested her fingertips on the board. On the flagstones beside her lay a pink crystal the size of a plum. She held it in her other hand, the way her grandmother had taught her, to keep her own thoughts from wandering.
The planchette moved without her pushing it, slow, as if it weighed more than wood ought to. It spelled no name she knew. It spelled out the path across the bog, one tussock at a time, and told her which stones would hold and which would take her to the knee.
She walked at first light with the crystal clenched in her fist. Where the ground held, she found Tom sitting against a boundary cairn, boots full of peat water, face grey but breathing. Mara never asked the board another question. The crystal sits on her windowsill now, and she still salts the doorstep on the first of every month, because the moor always keeps a tally.
