Black fine-line geometric tattoo of circles, triangles and radiating lines running down the centre of a woman's back, placed on the back.

Geometric line tattoo down a back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is seen from behind, with her face not visible, showing a symmetrical tattoo down the centre of her back. The design is built from thin black lines forming triangles, radiating spokes and several circles, with a dotted line rising towards the nape of the neck. The background shows photographers and a hedge, and the bare back is set against a sheer beige dress.

The chart had to be drawn in ink because the ship's printers had failed twice since the Callisto dock, and Ines Varga refused to trust a plan she could not hold. She pinned the vellum to the galley table, weighted its corners with two spanners and a jar of cold tea, and ran a ruler from the hub outward. Six spokes. Each one a bearing to a station that no longer answered its beacon.

Her brother Dov had built the original in the dry months before the quarantine, a diagram of the lanes between the ring habitats, and he had insisted every lane start at the same point so the whole thing would balance. Ines had never understood why a navigator needed balance. Dov said balance was how you knew nobody had lied to you about distance. Circles marked the habitats, three of them stacked along the axis like beads on a wire, and the dotted line above them was the old relay path, the one that climbed out of the gravity well toward the transfer ring nobody used anymore.

By the third watch the chart was finished and the lines had stopped looking like geometry. She found the dead beacon at the end of the fourth spoke, its circle drawn fuller than the others because Dov had pressed harder there, as he always did when he was unhappy. She keyed the transmitter once, twice. Static, then a voice she had not expected, thin and ten seconds late.

'You kept the lines straight,' Dov said. 'Good. Now tell me where you are.' She looked at the paper, at the point where everything met, and wrote the coordinates in the margin in her small square hand. Then she traced the dotted line upward with one finger, as far as the margin would allow, and began to plot the way home.
