Star trail tattoo down the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person with dark hair in a loose updo, viewed from behind. A trail of small, outlined five-pointed stars in black ink starts at the nape of the neck and drifts down across the upper back, with the stars shrinking and spacing out as they descend. The shot is shallow in focus, with photographers and cameras blurred in the background against a warm, pale backdrop.

The Starlight Cavern has been losing stars since Whitsun, so Teodor sends you up the ladder with the brush and the tin of Indian ink. Start where the cloth meets the wooden lintel, he says, and go down the wall as if you are following a dropped handkerchief. You are eleven, the canvas smells of paraffin and rain, and the big stars come first, five points each, then smaller and smaller as the wall curves towards the boards.

Customers drift through all evening under the painted sky, and nobody looks at the walls. They look up, the generator hums, and a girl in a yellow mac sits on the bench below your ladder and cries about a boy from the Waltzer. You keep painting. Teodor says the trick is to make a trail look like it is going somewhere, because a line of stars always points at something: a door, a dark field, a river.

On the last night, with the lorries already lined up on the lane, you finish the final star at the foot of the wall, a dot no bigger than a lentil, just above the sawdust. You step back. Nothing in the tent points anywhere except the exit flap. Teodor stands behind you with his arms folded and says that one is for whoever comes looking. Then he folds the ladder, and you walk out into the wet grass, where the first lorry is already turning towards the road.
