Trail of stars down the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a trail of small five-pointed star outlines that starts at the nape of the neck and curves down the spine towards the mid back. The stars vary in size and are drawn in thin, light linework with soft grey shading, in black ink only. The background is blurred and shows people with cameras, with the tattoo as the clear focus against the skin.

Orrin had been counting stars for eleven days when the hull began to hum at the wrong pitch, and he still had not found the seventh marker. The chart on the bulkhead of the survey cutter showed a thread of dots bending away from the Halloran Reach, each one a star someone had once named and then forgotten. His brother, Tam, had drawn it by hand on the back of a ration sleeve, and the lines on the screen never quite matched the ink.

He pulled up the long-range log and scrolled past forty years of dead transmissions. Somewhere in the drift the trail had been folded, the way a child folds a page to make a boat. Orrin realised the stars were not wrong. The map was. He traced the curve with a grease pencil until the ship's lamps caught the faint pale marks, and then he saw it: the trail did not lead anywhere. It only pointed back toward the dock where the first survey had left.
He sat with that for a long while. The cutter's clock ticked over into the next shift. Then he keyed the comm and asked for the seventh marker's coordinates, not the navigation solution, but the plain sequence of numbers Tam had always read aloud when he was nervous. The answer came back in the calm voice of the dock computer: the star was still there, exactly where Tam had put it, and it was burning a little brighter than the rest.
Orrin tucked the pencil into his shirt pocket, set the drive to idle, and let the trail go on turning behind them.
