Geometric skull on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black linework skull is built from straight, interlocking lines that form angular facets across the cranium and jaw. The lines are solid black on pale skin, with no shading or fill, and the design sits centrally on the upper arm against a plain white background. The photograph is black and white, with a woman's hand and dark hair at the edges of the frame and her face not shown.

The landlady at Gull Rock boarding house, Mrs Pell, hands you the key to room nine with one rule: the sash stays shut after dusk, because the glazier who had the room before you drew on the window and never finished. You carry your case up anyway. The room smells of wet salt and lamp oil.

On the sill lies a sheet of paper with a skull drawn in straight ink strokes, every plate of the cranium cut into triangles and trapezoids, the jaw a ladder of lozenges. Beneath it, in pencil: measure twice, the cold line keeps. You pin it above the bed because it is the only thing in the room that seems to know where it is going.
At midnight the tide comes over the breakwater and the lead cames in the window begin to hum, tapping as though someone is counting the panes from the outside. You count too. Forty-one, forty-two. At forty-three the glass goes still, and you see that the eye socket of the drawing is the one pane left empty, a hole the shape of a gull's wing where the old man meant to set something.
In the morning you ask Mrs Pell about him. She says he glazed every window in the house himself, then walked into the sea with his tools in a sack, leaving one blank pane in the cellar with nothing to do but wait. You take a lamp down, find a sheet of blue glass the exact size of the hollow, and fit it in with your own hands, the lead bending to you as if it had been waiting all along.
