Geometric maple leaf line drawing

Geometric · Colour · Flash

A single maple leaf drawn as a network of thin, straight dark red lines with no shading. The leaf is built from triangular facets, with a short stem at the base, and it sits centred on a plain white background. The image is a clean, open outline design rather than a photograph of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Penhale kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Lane, and the only thing in her yard that would not be told what to do was the maple. Captain Tobias Marr had carried it up from Halifax in a tub in 1911, and he swore it would take to salt air if you kept the wind off it. It did not. Every spring it put out leaves, and every autumn the gales off the bay tore them to rags before they had turned.

Lodgers were sorry for it. Edwin Lusk, a land surveyor who stayed three weeks one wet March, sat on the back step with a board on his knee and drew the tree instead of the sea. He did not draw it soft. He drew it in straight lines, a leaf made of triangles with every point joined to the next, and when Mrs Penhale asked him what the lines were for, he said they were where the wind would have to go round.

He left on the Monday. On the Tuesday she went out to the tub with a pair of shears and found one leaf still hanging on the lowest bough, red as a pillar box, its edges cut to a sharp point at every corner like his drawing. The gale had not touched it. She cut it free and pinned it inside the cover of the visitors' book, under his drawing, and every September since, a new lodger has turned to that page and asked why the leaf has so many lines. She tells them the wind has to go round.
