The tour bus came again on Saturday, and I have to tell you about the girl who sat on the curtain wall with her shoes off. Nobody in the party noticed her except me, because from the gatehouse she was only the size of a thumb. Pink as a boiled sweet, she was, slipping along the stones above the broken arrow slit as if the slit had been built for her.

I went up the spiral stair to shoo her off, which is what Mr Harcourt would have wanted, and found only a smear of glitter on the lichen. Purple, the kind you buy in a packet from the market at Ludlow. Somebody's craft box must have come apart up there. The bus party laughed when I came down with my sleeves full of sparkle, and one boy asked if the castle was haunted. I said only by children, which is true.

Thirty years I have kept this place, and the things that survive the winters are never the things we meant to last. The mortar crumbles and the banners rot, but a bit of fairy glitter sits on the stone as if it has all the time in the world. I have stopped sweeping it up.

Come up in June and bring your good boots. I will show you the arrow slit, and you can decide for yourself whether anybody was ever really shooting from it.
