Black and white geometric panda with a red and white faceted balloon on a string, drawn as a tattoo design in a geometric style.

Geometric panda holding a red balloon

Geometric · Mixed · Flash

A panda lies curled up on its side, drawn with bold black outlines and angular, faceted shapes. A red and white faceted balloon, built from triangles with concentric stripes, is tied to its paw by a single black line. The panda is filled in black and white, while the balloon is the only area of colour, shaded in red.

Nobody on Saltney Pier believed the panda had bought its balloon, least of all Dilys, who ran the candyfloss stall and kept a tally of everything that moved along the boards. It had come on the ninth morning of the fog, curled on the bench outside the bait shop with its back to the sea, and the red balloon was tied to one paw with a length of black cord that ran taut toward the sky.

'It's not for sale,' said Emrys, the balloon man, when she came over with her purse already open. He had been selling those balloons since his father's day, each one folded from a single sheet of tinted foil into a dozen triangles, the stripes running inward to a point like ripples going the wrong way round a pond. 'Sold that one in March to a girl called Ffion. Lost it off the lighthouse steps before the rain came in.' He nodded at the bench. 'Seems somebody found the string.'

Ffion did not come back for it. Dilys watched the panda all afternoon while the fog thinned to a grey smear above the harbour wall. It never opened its eyes, though once the cord twitched, the way a fishing line does when something under the water changes its mind. At dusk the fog lifted clean away, the lighthouse beam swept across the boards, and the balloon rose with it, lifting the panda's paw an inch off the wood.

By morning the bench was empty. There was only a single triangle of red foil wedged between two planks, and far beyond the wall, very high, a red point turning slowly toward the cliffs where the girl lived. Dilys pinned the triangle above the candyfloss after that, and never once thought to sell it.
