Dear Wren, the crate of cut stones came up on the Tuesday barge, all of them wrapped in oilcloth the way you like, and I counted every one twice before I signed for it. The big blue one from Antwerp is cracked along the girdle, so I've put it aside for the grinder. The rest are fine. You'll want to see the rough ones I've set out on the bench under the lamp, because the light off the river makes them look like they're full of water.

I've been drawing the old heart pattern again, the one your mother kept pinned above the stove. Four facets across the crown, a straight line down to the point, nothing added that doesn't need to be there. I tried it with the cutting angles you showed me and it came out true for the first time. Mr Hallam at the wharf office asked what I was sketching and I told him a heart, and he laughed and said that's a poor sort of diamond. He's not wrong, but a diamond has never once kept anyone's secret, and a heart that's been cut properly keeps everything it's given.

Bring the good loupe when you come. The lock at Harcombe is slow this month, so give yourself the whole afternoon. If the barge is late, don't wait on the towpath in the rain; go to the Anchor and ask for Sol, who owes me a favour and will find you a dry chair. I'll have the kettle on and the lamp lit, and the stones will be waiting, all of them turned to the window so you can see where the light goes in.

Yours, in the workshop, Ada
