Geometric panda on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A panda is drawn in faceted, angular geometric shapes, with thin black outlines and solid black fills on the ears, eye patches, arms and legs. The body and face are left as bare skin, so the white of the panda comes from the untattooed skin. The design is small and centred on the forearm against a plain grey wall.

The snow had come in the night and sealed the lane to Lower Hallam, so you walked the boundary wall on foot with a bucket of feed and a torch that gave out before dawn. Mr Pell's ewes were somewhere beyond the thorn hedge. The only tracks in the white were yours and something larger, each print set down at a clean angle, as though it had been measured with a rule.

At the gap in the wall you found it: a panda, or what a joiner might make of a panda if he had only been told about one. It sat on its haunches with its back to the wind, built from faceted planes of frozen hay and slate-coloured shadow. Its eye patches were two dark wedges. Nothing about it moved, but the snow beneath it had melted in a neat square, as if it had been sitting there all night keeping its own warmth.
Your grandmother always said the hill takes the shapes it is given, and that you should never count anything that counts you back. You set the bucket down and counted the ewes through the gap anyway. Eleven, then twelve, huddled against a drift that someone had cut flat along one edge. The thirteenth lamb was missing. When you turned to tell the panda, the square of bare earth had widened to hold a small body tucked against its black forelegs.
By the time the sun cleared the ridge the panda was gone, and the ground was only snow again. Pell asked at the gate how many you had found. Thirteen, you said, and he counted them himself, frowning, and got twelve, and then got thirteen, and said nothing more about it.
