Shaded figure inside a triangle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the forearm showing a bold black triangle outline enclosing a softly shaded, abstract figure. The lower part of the figure is filled with solid black, while the upper areas are built from stippled grey dots that fade into the skin. The image is centred on the tattoo against a plain skin tone and a pale fabric background, in black and grey only.

You come up the lane behind the dodgems just as the generator coughs itself quiet, and Mrs Okafor is already sitting on the step of the caravan with a tin of shortbread open on her knee. She doesn't look up. "The pennant's gone again," she says. "Ask the boy in the tent before he sells it to the crows."

The pennant in question is a triangle of faded red canvas that has flown over the Gilded Crown for thirty-one summers, and you know its shape by heart, because you have been mending it since March. Tonight the wind has torn the corner clean off. You find the boy in the big top, lying on the sawdust under the rigging, staring up at the dark peak where the poles meet. He says the canvas breathed in and folded over something, and he wants you to look.
You don't see anything at first. Then the lamp swings, and there it is: a pale shape tucked up under the apex, grey as a moth, bent forward as if listening to the ground. It has no face you can name. It is only the shadow of a thing that has been waiting in the rigging since the last town, patient and nearly weightless.
You climb the pole with the needle in your teeth and the thread wound round your wrist. Halfway up, the figure lifts its head, and the whole tent exhales. Sew the corner shut, Mrs Okafor always said, and nothing will get in that you haven't let in. So you stitch, and the shape settles back into the cloth, and in the morning the flag is flying again, red and whole, with a small neat seam that nobody notices but you.
