Geometric rabbit on the upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A seated rabbit is drawn in a thin black outline and filled with angular, faceted blocks of colour. The facets use blue, teal, turquoise and yellow, with darker blue shading along the body and haunch. The rabbit sits centrally against a plain, softly blurred background, with the skin tone and arm curve visible around it.

His daughter Marjorie used to sit under the workbench with a bread knife and a jar of lead came, cutting shapes that weren't meant for windows. She cut a hare once, sitting up on its haunches, all corners and no roundness, because she said a soft animal would only be sorry for itself. Her father told her to sweep up. She slipped the hare into the church hall window anyway, low down by the radiator, where the light comes through at four o'clock in March and scatters a dozen small suns across the floorboards.
Nobody knew it was hers. When the parish sold the hall and the windows went into a skip, her younger brother climbed in after them and found the hare still whole, its black lead lines not broken anywhere. He carried it home under his coat like contraband, and it sat in their kitchen for years until the damp got into the frame.
So if you go past the bakery on Crossgate this Saturday, look at the back door. That's the hare. Nobody paid for it and nobody asked, and every morning the first light finds it, and the blue still comes through.
