Hairless cat and forget-me-nots on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hairless cat's face sits at the top of the design, with pink and red faceted ears, blue eyes and a grey head. Below it, blue forget-me-not flowers with yellow centres and green leaves frame the muzzle. Angular, faceted shading and bold flat colour fill the design against the forearm, which is cropped out of frame at the top and bottom.

Every morning before the customs man unlocked the iron gate, the hairless grey cat came down the stones of Vell Bridge and inspected each cart as if it owed her money. Nobody at the ford knew where she had come from. Old Teodor said she had walked up out of the river in the wet spring of the great flood, pink-eared and bald as a boiled egg, and sat down on the toll post as though she had paid for it.

Papers were a matter of luck at that gate, and the cat had opinions about luck. A man with a forged seal would find her sitting on his boot until he confessed. A woman carrying a child that was not hers would feel the cat lie across the small feet and purr until the guard lost interest. The guards tried bribing her once and found the coins buried under the forget-me-nots along the bank, where the river kept them watered.
One October a clerk named Ilse came through with a satchel of letters from the western mines, letters from men who had never written home. She had been told not to look for her brother's name. She looked anyway. The cat jumped onto the cart wheel, sat on the satchel and stared until Ilse opened it. Inside was one envelope, unposted, in a hand she knew. He had written it in spring and forgotten the stamp.
Ilse wept on the bridge while the carts queued behind her. The guard waved her through without a stamp. The following spring, they say, the forget-me-nots grew thick on the western bank and nowhere else, and the cat sat among them with her eyes half closed, guarding the way home.
