Geometric rose on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric rose is drawn in a single black outline on the inner forearm, built from angular facets that suggest the petals curling around a centre. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, so the design relies on its outline alone. The photograph is black and white, with the tattoo placed near the middle of the frame against a dark sleeve and a softly lit background.

It will not come. What comes instead is the chart. Every angle I drew on it this month was a bearing I was sure of, and I am sure of nothing now except that the bosun has lost his spectacles again and blames the cook.

You asked in your last letter whether the sea had made me a different sort of man. I have decided it has made me a more careful draughtsman, which you will say is the same thing. Yesterday I sat with the dividers and tried to fold a rose out of straight lines, the way you once showed me with paper and a penknife on the kitchen table in Penzance. Six facets for the outer petals, three for the heart, and never once a curve. The mate thought I had gone mad. He may be right. But when I set the last line down the whole thing turned in my hand like a bloom opening under lamplight, and I laughed aloud alone in the chart room.
The Ann makes Lisbon by Thursday if the wind holds. I have posted this at the Horta cable office so it will reach you first. Keep the lamp lit on the landing for me, and do not let the cat sleep on the chart I left you. The corners are the important part.
Your loving husband, Tom
