Rose with sheet music petals on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A rose is shown in the centre of the image, rendered with soft shading and fine detail in its petals. Musical staff lines and notes run through the outer petals and fade out toward the edges of the design, which sits on a forearm against a paved background. The image is in black and grey only, with smooth tonal gradients across the petals and a light, even composition.

The pages came off the press still smelling of ink, and Mrs Okonedo at the chandlery wanted them by Friday, so you sat up with the lamp pulled close and copied the bass line for the Saltmarsh Male Voice Choir one stave at a time. Outside, the tide was turning against the breakwater. Somebody's halyard knocked against a mast in the dark, a steady tick like a metronome that had lost its nerve.

By the second week you had stopped reading the words. You copied the crotchets and quavers the way a gardener pinches off dead heads, without thinking, and the staves began to curl at the edges where the damp got into the paper. Gerald from the lifeboat station brought a bottle of something brown and said the rose on the wall of the harbour master's cottage had come up overnight, black and grey as a bruise, and nobody could say who had planted it. You laughed, but when you walked past at dusk the petals were made of music, crotchets folded into the curl of each leaf, and the rests hung between them like slack washing.

On the Friday you took the finished score down to the quay. The choir was already singing, rough and warm through the open door of the hall. You left the pages on the bollard, weighted with a stone, and when you looked back the wind had lifted them into the air and carried them out over the water, a bloom of notes unfolding across the grey.
