Geometric sphere and diamonds on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A forearm carries a geometric composition of two diamond shapes enclosing a wireframe sphere, a dotted shaded upper panel and a flower of life pattern in the lower panel. A solid teal circle and black brush-like strokes sit across the centre, adding colour and movement against the black outlines. The design is photographed straight on against a white textured wall, with the arm filling the centre of the frame.

Dear Ivy,

You will not believe what Mr Calloway did to the floor of the Pavilion before they reopened it. Three weeks he spent on his knees with a steel rule and a pot of chalk, drawing rings that overlapped like soap bubbles, until the boards looked like the inside of a clock. He said the old pattern had been wrong for seventy years, that the hall had been sitting off-centre, and that a dance floor ought to be a sum that comes out even. Nobody asked him to explain. We just stepped where he told us.
On the night of the reopening, the band had a girl on the trumpet who played the same three notes over and over, and the dancers kept turning to find their partners on the diamond shapes he had marked in the corners. I stood under the teal lamp that hangs from the rafters, the one shaped like a moon, and watched its light slide across the floor in a single bright disc. Where it lay, the chalk lines seemed to vanish and the room folded in on itself, as if all of us were standing on the same point.
Then Calloway came out from the back with his brush, still wet with black paint, and swept it across the boards in one long stroke, the way a man signs a cheque he is pleased with. Everybody cheered. He bowed. I stepped into the disc of light and stayed there, perfectly still, while the whole room kept turning around me.
Write back soon and tell me if your mother has forgiven the bus conductor.
All my love, Dot
