Crescent moon and spiders on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon with a spider web across its inner curve sits at the top of the forearm, with a thread running down to two spiders with shaded bodies and outlined legs. The linework is bold and black, with solid shading on the moon and spider abdomens. The design is in black and grey, and the composition runs vertically along the arm against a plain background.

Dear Ivy,

The blackcurrants are finished and the wasps have gone sour in the shed, but the garden has never looked better. You'd hardly know the back wall was the same wall we climbed when we were nine. Mr Pargeter has given up on his leylandii and let the ivy have it, and I have stopped fighting the bindweed. Something has to be left to do what it wants.

Two of the spiders you complained about in August have moved into the old greenhouse frame, the big ones with the shaded bellies, and they have strung a web between the cold frame and the rain butt. Each morning the dew catches on it. I went out before six on Tuesday with my coffee and the moon was still up, a thin paring over the Hendersons' chimney, and the web had caught it. Right in the curve of the moon, as though someone had hung a net for it. I stood there so long the coffee went cold.

I have decided not to sweep them. Gerald would have, but Gerald is no longer here to tell me what a good garden looks like, and I find I quite like the company. The spiders keep the aphids off the roses. They drop a thread from the gutter to the lavender whenever the wind changes, and by evening there is a line of silver running down the garden like something you could follow home.

Write back soon and tell me whether Dorset is still as wet as the radio says. I'll leave the light on in the potting shed for you.

Love, Margaret
