A stag head with splayed antlers is drawn in faceted, polygonal black lines on the inner forearm. The design is built from straight segments and a few internal lines, with no shading or fill. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Carrick Fell road for three days, and Mrs Hale had run out of candles before she ran out of guests. Ada sat at the end of the long table with a sheet of squared paper and a pencil, folding a stag out of the grey light while the others argued over cards. The commercial traveller wanted his bath heated. The two hikers wanted to know whether the barometer was lying.

Ada had learned the stag from her grandfather, a surveyor who went down the pit after the survey work dried up and never stopped believing that any shape could be reduced to straight lines if you were patient enough. He would take a cutting from the Ordnance sheet and fold it until the hills stood up off the paper. The stag was the last thing he taught her. You did not draw antlers as curves. You broke each tine into facets, one angle after another, until the animal looked assembled from cold glass.

She had the head nearly finished when the landlord's boy came in stamping, saying the lower gate was drifted to the eaves and there was a light on the far slope that should not be there. Nobody moved. Ada smoothed the paper flat, drew the last line from brow to muzzle with the edge of her rule, and held the stag up to the window. It looked back at her, all angles and no softness, and for the first time she understood what her grandfather had meant.

Outside, the light on the slope blinked twice, then steadied and came on down towards the inn. Ada turned the paper so the stag faced the door, the way her grandfather always had when someone was coming in from the cold.
