Geometric star and pine forest on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large geometric star pattern in white linework sits at the upper forearm, with its centre filled by a deep blue and purple night sky dotted with small white stars. Below, soft green and teal aurora-like shading fades into a row of solid black pine tree silhouettes along the wrist. The palette mixes cool blues and greens with black, and the design runs down the arm in a vertical composition against a plain background.

Agnes had drawn the same eight-pointed star on every chart she'd made for the Kirkwall survey, and the inspector said it was a waste of good vellum. She kept at it anyway, pinning the sheet to the table with a pair of brass dividers while the stove ticked behind her. Outside, the window glass had frosted to grey fur, and beyond it the spruce on the ridge stood black as ink.

Her brother Tam had gone up the valley in October to chart the new road and had not come down. The men from the works said the pines swallowed sound up there, and that a surveyor who stared too long at the sky would forget which way was north. Agnes did not believe in that kind of talk. She believed in angles and in the stubborn arithmetic of stars, which turned the same way every night whether anybody was watching or not.
So she worked out the bearing from his last letter, a line she could trace with her fingernail, and laid the star over it, eight points, each one a path a man could follow home. On the night the lights came, green curtains unrolling over the ridge, she carried the lamp out to the step and watched them crawl across the sky like something breathing. Below the ridge, a single lantern moved slowly through the trees, stopped, and moved again.
She did not run. She went back inside, took down the star, and began to draw the road.
