Mountains and pine trees in a diamond on the ribs

Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped design shows two mountain peaks above a dark band of pine tree silhouettes. Below the band, the trees repeat as a dotted, fading reflection, and the lower and upper corners are filled with horizontal hatched lines. The work is built from stippling and dense solid black, with light skin showing through between the peaks, and the composition is centred on the side of the torso.

4.10 a.m. Ovens lit, first trays in. Dad always said you can't hurry dough, only the day. The shop window is still black, and if I hold the lamp just so I can see the ridge across the square doubled in the glass, the pines hanging upside down in the dark like a second forest somebody poured out of the first.

Mrs Kerr came in yesterday asking for the tall rye, the one shaped like a peak. I told her I'd cut her a slice if she stopped going on about the loch. She says the water freezes at the edges by November and goes so still it holds the mountains twice over. I've never seen it. I've only ever seen flour fall through the sieve, grey then white.

Tonight I scored the loaves in a diamond without deciding to, three slashes meeting at a point. When they came out the cuts had opened into something like a ridge with shadow pooled beneath it, the crust split dark where the heat got in. I stood in the back with the door propped, breathing the cold, thinking the trees were only waiting for their reflection to catch up.

At six the first van will come and the square will fill with people who don't look up. I'll sell them the loaves and keep one back under a cloth. Tomorrow I'll take the bus up the glen with it in a paper bag, set it on the edge of the water, and see whether the mountains look the same from the other side.
