Geometric stylised animal on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stylised animal, possibly a dog, is drawn in flat faceted shapes with a curled tail and a pointed snout. Bold black linework outlines the figure, and the shading is built from angular planes of orange, yellow, magenta and red. The design sits across the forearm against a plain light background.

The offcuts came back to me in a biscuit tin, which is how Edwin always kept the things he meant to finish later. Sixty years of cutting glass for the chapel and the chandler's had left him a drawer of slivers no bigger than a playing card, each one coloured the way a bruise or a barley field is coloured. He sorted them across the kitchen table the week the thaw came, and I watched him try to make a dog out of them.

It was never going to be soft. Edwin believed a thing should be built from its planes, not drawn, so the dog came out in angles: a wedge of ochre for the head, a magenta slab for the flank, a tail he curled round like a question mark because, he said, a dog's tail is the only honest part of it. He used lead came and a soldering iron that smelled of singed hair. The black lines he painted on the back with a sable brush, and they never quite met the edges, which he said was the point.

When the lamp went out the dog would catch the last of the window light and throw orange across the flagstones like spilt cordial. I told him it looked as if it was running. He said it was running, only slowly, through a village it had never been allowed to leave.

We buried him under the apple tree in March, though he was never more than a panel of glass. I kept the tin. The last sliver in it is the magenta one, and some mornings I hold it up to the window to see whether the dog is still going somewhere.
