Koala silhouette with sunset on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black koala silhouette sits on the forearm, with its inner area filled by a sunset scene of a pale sun, dark mountain peaks and small white stars. The solid black outline contrasts with the orange, red and purple gradient shading inside the figure. The design is centred on the forearm against a softly blurred background.

Dear Marjorie, the dog has finally stopped barking at the gum tree, so I can write properly. You will laugh, but there is a koala living in the big red river gum behind the shearing shed. Mr Pargeter swears it came down from the Flinders on the back of a load of hay. It sits in the fork all day like a bad-tempered bag of flour, and at dusk it climbs down to the fence and studies the sky as though it has been asked to sign for it.

Last Thursday I drove out to the boundary with the lamb feed and the light was going. The whole west had turned the colour of marmalade, with the ridge standing up dark against it like cut paper. The koala was on the top rail, black as a stove, and I swear the sunset was sitting inside its shape, the pale sun low in its middle and the peaks climbing up through its chest. I stopped the ute and simply watched. Even the crows had the decency to be quiet.
Then it turned its head, slow as a vicar, and looked straight at me. I said good evening. It yawned, showing a tongue no bigger than a thimble, and went back to the sky.
I suppose what I am trying to say is that you were right, I should not have come out here on my own. But I have stopped counting the sunsets I missed in England. Come in the spring. I will take you out to see the koala, and you can tell me it is only a bear.
