Geometric triangle and dot designs on hands
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are raised toward the camera, with small dot rows running along several fingers and triangle and chevron motifs on the fingers and back of the hands. Wide bands of lattice and scale-like pattern wrap the wrists, and the designs look like temporary or metallic-style ink. The monochrome photograph is sharp and evenly lit, with dark nail polish, rings and long hair framing the hands against a wooden background.

Four in the morning and the ovens have been warm since half three. Nessa has gone to the back to find the bench scraper she swears she left by the proving baskets, which means she has put it in the flour bin again. I have the tray of tin loaves to score before the sun clears the car park, and my hands are doing what Mum taught them: three quick diagonal cuts, then a fourth so the crumb opens like a chevron.

Mum's pattern book is still in the drawer under the till, its pages gone soft as cloth. She drew every scoring design in biro: a row of dots for the seeded batch, a column of little triangles for the rye, a lattice for the milk loaves the regulars call the basket ones. Nobody ever asked her why. She said a loaf should look like someone had thought about it before it went in.
This morning a stranger in a wet coat asked for the milk loaf by name and wanted to know if we still did the lattice. I said we did. He stood at the counter tracing the triangles in the air with one finger, counting under his breath, and bought two. When he left, there was a folded note under the saucer: Your mother's cuts are still the sharpest in the valley. I have read it nine times, and flour has got into the ink.
The window is going grey now and the last tray is scored. Tomorrow I'll draw the chevrons on the back of my hand in biro before I start, the way she did, so the first loaf knows what it's meant to be. Then I'll put the kettle on before Nessa finds the scraper in the bin.
