The band kept coming out lopsided, so Dilnaz filed the same strip of silver three nights running while the stallholders along the rail pulled their shutters down one by one. Mr Anand had stopped pretending not to watch her from the next bench. When the lamps at the far end finally died, she set the crescent blank beside the little dish of turquoise chips her grandmother had left her, the ones she had been saving for something worth the stone.

Her grandmother had always said a moon cut into metal should face the way its owner was going, and an om pressed inside a band should be the last thing a person touched before sleep. Dilnaz had never believed in that sort of thing. Still, she found herself turning the blank towards the window each time she set it down, as if the street outside might show her which way was east.

A woman came to the stall just before the first trains, holding a bundle of cloth against her chest. She wanted a ring for her sister, who was leaving on the early service to Lahore and would not look back at anything that held her here. Dilnaz nodded, took the measure, and worked until her shoulders burned, stamping the om inside the band and turning the crescent so its horns pointed toward the platform.

When the woman returned at sunrise, the ring slipped on without a catch. She looked at it for a long moment, then pressed a folded note into Dilnaz's palm and asked for the turquoise set on top. Dilnaz did not ask who the ring was really for. She only noticed that the crescent now faced the street she had just come from.
