Geometric wolf head on a calf

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A stylised wolf head sits at the centre of the design, with its ears, brow and muzzle built from angular facets. Fine black linework and dotted shading define the features, while the fur edges and inner ears are textured with stipple. Overlapping triangles frame the head above and below, and the photograph shows the tattoo on a calf against a plain, pale background.

You were sent up to Hollin Edge with a theodolite, a surveyor's chain and a clerk's instruction to settle the boundary before the spring fair. The parish has argued over that line since the old mill burned, and the only thing everyone agrees on is that the wolf walks it. Nobody has seen one in ninety years, the clerk says, yet every man who has come up here has come back with the same grey shape at the tree line, watching, never nearer than the third stile.

By noon you have three cairns set in a triangle, the spire of St Oswin's sitting exactly on the far point, and you are bent to the eyepiece when the wolf steps out of the bracken. Its ruff is cut in hard facets like frost on a windowpane, and its eyes are two pale points you could sight along. It does not come closer. It settles where your second cairn meets the wood, and the crosshairs slide across it as if it were a mark on the glass.

You write the angles in your ledger because that is what you are paid to do. The wolf, the cairns and the spire make three neat triangles, one inside another, and every corner lands on a number the old deeds have been hunting for. When you walk the line that evening, the hedgerows bend to follow it without a single crooked turn. You draw the boundary exactly where the three points fall, and the council signs it without reading the margins.

In the morning the stile is furred with frost, and there are three-toed prints stepping out from the bracken and back again, always keeping the same distance. You coil the chain on the flattest cairn and leave it there. The ink in the ledger has gone a little silver in the cold, and the triangles have dried sharp and black on the page, pointing home.
