Geometric wolf head on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head in a faceted, geometric style fills the inner forearm, with its face angled towards the viewer. The shading is built from fine, flowing black lines that follow the planes of the face, with a dotted stipple fading out below the jaw. The left half is left in black and grey, while the right half carries a soft turquoise wash, and the background is a blurred brick wall.

By the third week of the survey, Teodor had stopped sleeping in the hut and started sleeping in the map room, where the contour sheets hung from wire like washing and the stove ticked itself cool. His theodolite was packed away. His pencils were sharpened to needles. Outside, the scree above the Kessel tarn went grey at dusk, and every evening at the same hour a wolf came down it, slow as a clerk walking home.

He began drawing it in the margin of sheet fourteen, first as a rough shape, then as planes. He could not draw fur. The ministry did not want fur. It wanted the face as a set of facets, each bounded by a line that could be measured, so he split the head down the middle. The left half he hatched in grey, the lines bending with the slope of the rock. The right half took the tarn's colour, which he matched by thinning a wash of ink with the blue from his paint box. Where the paper gave out below the jaw, he left a scatter of dots, because that was where the ground fell away into nothing he had surveyed.
On the fourth evening the wolf stopped at the cairn and looked at him directly, and Teodor understood that the eyes were the one spot height he had never taken. He stood up. The animal turned and climbed back up the scree, and when he checked the drawing against the plan he found a ridge he had marked as a false crest, and it was there after all, exactly where the wolf had paused.
He sent the sheet to the ministry in a cardboard tube with a note: head of wolf, Kessel ridge, altitude uncertain. A clerk in Brno wrote back asking what a wolf was doing on a topographic survey. Teodor pinned the reply above the stove and did not answer it. Outside, the lines kept running down the slope toward the water, and the dots at the edge grew a little further apart with each sheet he drew.
