Geometric wolf head on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head facing forward is built from angular, interlocking triangles drawn in thin black line. The eyes, nose and muzzle are defined by the facets, with no solid fill or shading. The design is set on pale skin, centred on the forearm against a plain light background.

Dear Ruth,

The triangulation men finished the last pillar on Calder Hill on Tuesday, and I have been awake every night since trying to draw what they left us. Taken one at a time, the sightings are dull: a bearing here, a distance there, the angles summing to a hundred and eighty as they should. Laid over the city map at midnight, with the gas lamps going out one street at a time, they make something else. Every line runs from pillar to pillar, and the lines cross and fold until the whole district has a jaw, two pricked ears, and a pair of eyes set somewhere under the cathedral.

Mr Harte says I am tired and seeing faces, the way sailors see mermaids. Perhaps. But when I shut the lamp and walk the ridge road towards the river, the bones of it are still there in the dark, sharp at the edges, and the lanes that should run straight seem to bend off towards a point just above the water. I took the chain out on Thursday to check one of them. It was exactly where the sum said it would be.

I have started keeping the plates in a tin box under my cot, each sheet pricked through with a needle so I can hold them to the window and see the light come through the joins. Last night I held up the one that shows the muzzle and the wet dark gap of the river beneath it, and a boy in the next lane whistled, long and low, the way a dog answers its name. I did not look out. Some things are better left as angles.
