Walking dog outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms the outline of a stocky dog with upturned ears and a short tail, shown in a walking pose facing right. The linework is thin and even with no shading or fill, so the figure appears as an open silhouette against the skin. The tattoo sits on the lower leg near the ankle, centred in a plain close-up photo against a dark green background.

The dog came up the Carrow road on the third morning after the well at Pell Flat went dry. It walked down the middle of the tarmac, short legs working, head turned a little to the right as if someone ahead had called its name. Nobody in the town knew whose it was. It had a squared-off face and ears that stood up like it was always listening for bad news.

Mrs Ansell at the petrol station gave it a bowl of water, and it drank without looking at her, then went on toward the hills. Her son Dev drove the water lorry and said dogs did not walk that road. It went nowhere but the old mine, and the mine had shut in the spring. Still, the next morning the dog was back at the pump, and the morning after that it sat by the lorry's back wheel until he loaded the cans.
They followed it one afternoon, Dev and his cousin, past the cattle grid and the dead fence line, up to where the road bent round a shelf of red rock. The dog stopped there and looked back at them. Under the rock was a tin trough nobody had filled in years, and a pipe that still gave a thin cold trickle when the sun slid behind the hill.
They filled every can they had. When they came down, the dog was already trotting ahead of the lorry, turning now and then to check they were still coming. Mrs Ansell said the animal had gone down the shafts before she was born, and that the road remembers who walks it. Dev never asked her what she meant. He kept the cans full and left the gate open for the dog.
