Black fine line tattoo of a giraffe whose neck and body are formed from the words Stand Tall in script, on the side of the ribs.

Giraffe formed from Stand Tall lettering

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A giraffe outline is built from the words Stand Tall in black script, with the letters forming the body and the neck and the head drawn as a simple line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink sits on warm skin against a pink fabric edge at the right and bottom of the frame. The giraffe runs diagonally up the image, with the head at the upper right, giving the composition a strong upward direction.

The lost property cupboard at Calder Halt held forty-one umbrellas, two violins and a single wellington boot, and on the Tuesday after half term it also held Dylan Price, who had come back for the third time to ask about a drawing book with a green cover. Hetty Marsh put down her tea. "Describe it," she said, the way she had once asked customers to describe their missing dogs.

"It's got a giraffe in it," Dylan said. "Grandad drew it on the inside cover. The neck's made of writing." He didn't look up from the floor tiles. Hetty found the book under a timetable from 1987, opened it, and there it was: the long pencil neck, the head tipped sideways, and running up it in careful capitals, STAND TALL. Someone had gone over the letters in biro so many times the paper had gone shiny.

"He always said giraffes are only tall because they keep looking over the grass for trouble," Dylan said. "The kids at school say I'm short for my age. They say it like a joke."

Hetty walked him out to Platform Two, where the 4.12 to Ashby was sighing at the buffers. She didn't say anything wise. She pointed at the drawing, then at the edge of the platform, and waited. Dylan rolled his shoulders back, lifted his chin, and held the book up level with his eyes as if he were reading the sky. The doors opened. He didn't run for it. He walked on as though the train had been waiting for him, and the gold letters on the cover caught the low sun all the way down the carriage.
