Black fine line tattoo of a giraffe whose neck and body are formed by the words Stand Tall in script, shown in a black and white photo of skin.

Giraffe outline with Stand Tall lettering

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink giraffe outline is formed by the cursive lettering Stand Tall, with the words running up the neck and body and the head at the top right. The linework is thin and even, with the letters joined into the animal's silhouette and only the legs drawn as single lines. The image is greyscale, and the composition is close and centred on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The giraffe came to Thornley Fold in the back of a coal lorry, folded into a crate with straw in its mouth, and nobody in the village had ordered it. Mr Pell at the post office said it had been sent to the wrong address. The carter said it had been sent to the right one and the wrong century. The children climbed the railings to look at it all the same, because it was taller than the church gate and nobody had ever seen one that wasn't in a book.

Its neck was the trouble. It was built of pale wood and wire and it leaned out over the lane, so the milk cart had to swing wide and the schoolmistress, Miss Ardle, had to duck under it with her satchel held up. Old Tom Keeble, who had walked stooped for forty years, took offence at it. He said a thing that stood that tall was asking for trouble, and he went up the lane each morning to tell it so, and each morning he came back a little straighter, though he would not have admitted it.

By August the children had painted letters down its legs in red paint from the chapel door. STAND TALL, they wrote, the S swinging like a gate hinge. Tom saw it first on the Sunday, coming out from evensong with his hat in his hand. He stopped. He read it twice. Then he put the hat back on his head and walked home the long way, looking up.
