Giraffe outline with script on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a giraffe, with its head raised towards the top right, is tattooed on the upper back near the shoulder blade. Script lettering runs inside the body and along the neck of the giraffe, and the linework is a consistent dark black. The tattoo is shown in black ink only against lightly tanned skin, with a pink and striped top at the edge of the frame.

The river at Vansa was the border, and the guards on both banks had never agreed on who owned the reeds. So when the giraffe came down the hill at dusk, its neck rising above the watchtowers, nobody could decide whether to salute it or shoot.

It had walked out of the king's menagerie in the lowlands, the story goes, because the keeper had called it a cart horse with ideas. Its name was Oru, and it did not care for flags. It stepped into the shallows, cool water to its knees, and the customs clerk on the eastern bank, a thin man called Peder Hask, wrote in his ledger: one beast, no papers, taller than the post.
A girl selling eggs at the ford watched it cross. She told the clerk the animal had only wanted to see the far side, the way anyone does when told a thing cannot be seen. "Stand tall," she said to it, a phrase her grandmother used on children at the washing line. The giraffe bent its long head, considered her, and lifted it higher than the tower.
Peder never found a rule that covered it, so he wrote the only line he could: admitted, on the strength of the view. The ledger still sits in the Vansa customs house, the entry faded to a brown smudge, and the eastern side has called it the best crossing in the valley ever since.
