Giraffe silhouette on the back of a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black giraffe silhouette sits on the back of a hand near the wrist, with its head raised and legs slightly apart. The shape is filled with black ink and has simple outlines with little internal detail. The pale skin stands out clearly against the plain dark background, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The sunflowers along the back fence have grown taller than the shed roof this summer, and every morning you stand between them with the watering can and think about the cardboard giraffe. Your father cut it from a cereal box the year the fence went up, drew its neck so long the scissors had to go round in a slow curve, and pinned it to the shed door with two rusted drawing pins. It has been standing there ever since, bleached grey, its ears gone soft at the tips.

Nobody in the house could say why he chose a giraffe. He never went to Africa and never saw one in the flesh, only in the stripy pages of an atlas he kept under the stairs. What he liked, he said, was that a giraffe could see over everything in the garden while the rest of you were still pulling up weeds. So on hot afternoons you tip the can and watch the water find the roots, and you lift your eyes to where the paper animal leans its head out over the hedge, looking at the road.

The shed door finally sticks shut in the wet, and you work the drawing pins out with a butter knife. The giraffe comes away whole, lighter than you expected. Behind it, pressed into the wood, is a column of his pencil marks counting the heights of you and your brother, each one labelled with a year. The highest mark is yours, the year you stopped being the smallest in the house.

You fold the giraffe carefully, put it in your coat pocket, and go back to the sunflowers, still climbing, their heads now level with the place where his pencil stopped.
