Girl with a cloud for a head on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a collared, vertically striped dress is shown from the chest up, with a long plait hanging over one shoulder and a cloud covering her head and eyes. The linework is solid black and the cloud, dress and neck are shaded with stippled dots and fine hatching. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and is centred on the forearm against a plain background.

Dear Nell,

The wind came round to the east on Tuesday and brought the whole of the Gaskell pit down on us again, so the washing is grey and the bread tastes of it. I have stopped fighting it. Mam used to say the smoke was the village breathing, and I am starting to think she was right, because it never stops and nobody here asks it to.

Mr Tennant came to the door on Thursday with his cap in his hands and told me Dad's shift had been moved to the night stint at number three. He said it as if it were weather. I asked him whether anyone had thought to look up, and he did not understand me. I meant the sky. There is no sky left to look at, only a bank of it sitting on the chapel roof like a fleece somebody forgot to shake out.

I have been mending the pit lads' shirts at the kitchen table, three stitches at a time, because it gives my hands something to do while the kettle takes its time. Yesterday Ada Pringle asked whether I could see through the murk to the far end of Chapel Row. I said I could see perfectly well, thank you, and then I went out into the yard and stood there for an hour trying to prove it to myself.

Come home at Whitsun if they will spare you. Bring the blue collar you took, the one with the little pin dots, and I will sew it back on before the chapel tea. Dad says he will wash his face properly for once, if only so you can see it.

Your loving sister, Bea
