Woman with bird over eyes on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's head and neck in profile, with her eyes hidden beneath wavy hair and a small songbird perched on the crown. The design uses fine stippled dotwork for shading, with bold solid outlines and a patterned lace collar at the base. It is rendered entirely in black ink and grey tones, centred on the skin with plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dust took your eyes in the spring, but not your hands, and the household at the edge of Ostia still calls you the blind weaver when they think you cannot hear. You keep the loom-room swept and the warp taut. Wool-oil and lamp smoke cling to everything, and you learn the shape of each thread by its drag against your fingers.

A thrush came through the loom-room shutter in the month of the grape harvest and chose your head as its perch. Its claws found the knot of your hair and stayed there. Your mistress, Cornelia, wanted it wrung for the cook's pot. You stood very still, and when she came close, the bird sang a short run of notes above your brow, bright and exact, like a shuttle thrown twice. She laughed and went away.

All that autumn the thrush sang the patterns while you wove them. Each run of notes became a knot, each trill a border of tiny loops, and the lace you made for the hem of her collar grew finer than anything in the market. When she lifted the cloth to the light and asked who had taught you such work, you tied off the thread and said nothing. She did not ask again.

One morning the shutter was open and the bird was gone. You kept your hands on the loom and hummed the falling notes it had left you, working them into the last border, so that anyone who ran a thumb along the edge would find a small bird's song stitched into the knots.
