You find the stencil on the wall of the fourth-floor landing the week the lift finally dies for good. A girl in a dark dress stands with one hand out, as if testing for weather, and above her an umbrella spills black lines down the render. Someone painted her with a single careful swipe, and the damp has run the paint so she looks like she is standing in her own rain.

Mrs Okafor on the fourteenth floor says the girl was there when they moved in, and that the council has tried to scrub her off twice. You tell her you'll see what can be done, which is what you say to everyone, and you climb the stairs with a bucket and a sponge you have no intention of using. Every landing has a brown stain spreading across its ceiling, and under each stain sits a bucket that somebody has been emptying for years.

On the top floor the roof hatch is propped open, and the wind comes through smelling of wet concrete and frying onions from a flat below. You stand in the drizzle for a while, watching the car park lamps come on one by one. Nobody has ever asked you to fix the stairwell paint. They ask you to fix the leaks, and you have spent eleven years doing exactly that without once wondering who the girl was waiting for.

Back on the fourth floor you dip the sponge, then stop. The lines have dried sharp at the edges, and the girl is still holding her umbrella up over nothing. You leave the sponge in the bucket and go down to the flat where the water is coming through, and you tell the tenant, very politely, that the girl on the stairs is keeping dry better than either of you.
