Globe tattoo on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, detailed globe sits on the inner upper arm, with the arm raised and bent at the elbow. Thin black linework outlines the sphere and its meridian and latitude lines, while shaded areas and stippled detail mark the landmasses, including Asia and the Arctic. The ink is entirely black and grey against a plain light background, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

The globe in the chart room of the Maren Holt has a dent just above the Urals, where someone's elbow found it during a Biscay swell years ago, and you have been running your thumb over that dent for three nights while the ship grinds east through the Kara Sea. Captain Osmund Reyes keeps it lashed to the desk with a bungee cord and a strip of baize, because the ship has rolled hard since Murmansk and nothing else in the cabin has stayed where it was put.

"Show me the short way," he says, and you lay the brass meridian ring over the top of the sphere, the thin black lines crossing the Arctic like stitches on a sleeve. The ice shows in the stippled grey of the north, and the Siberian coast is a dark, crowded hand of shading that looks like it is trying to pull you in. Every time you measure, the distance shrinks, and every time he says the same thing: the sea does not care what the map looks like.

The ice closes on them two days later, a white wall grinding along the hull at dawn. The captain turns them south without speaking, and the globe sits there, unmoved, showing you the route they cannot take. You pencil the true position into the log, a small mark in a large grey space, and it looks nothing like the dot you had hoped for.

Before the watch changes, you tap the glass once, the way you would knock on a cabin door, and the whole world turns slowly under your hand, Asia sliding away to the left, the lines running on past the edge toward somewhere warmer.
