Globe with Wanderer banner on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A classic globe on a stand is wrapped in a ribbon banner lettered WANDERER, with a red and yellow compass rose above it marked N and E. The globe shows blue oceans and green and yellow landmasses, with bold black outlines and yellow and orange shading on the stand and ornamental details. Colour ink dominates the design against a plain skin background.

Nobody had oceans to spare in 1953.

Then Albie Crane came in out of the rain with one boot tied up with string and a kitbag that had been to war and back. He put his finger on Madagascar and asked how far it was to there. Mr Tanner said a long way, son. Albie said, that's what I'm counting on.

He paid four shillings he didn't have. The ribbon round the globe had a word painted across it, WANDERER, and Albie laughed so hard he had to sit on the step. He said it was a warning, not a boast. Then he wrapped the globe in his coat, caught the bus to the rail yard, and that was the last anyone on Market Street saw of either of them.

Except the postcard. Eleven years later one came to the shop from a harbour in Valparaiso, with a compass rose drawn in the corner in red ink and one line underneath: tell the window it can stop turning now, I've been round it myself.
