Glowing light bulb tattoo on a leg
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A realistic light bulb with a glowing amber filament sits at the centre, with small dark bird or bat silhouettes flying around it. Smooth grey shading gives the glass volume, while the filament is rendered in warm orange and yellow. Neo-traditional flowers, green leaves and a dark animal figure fill the lower and upper edges of the frame in bold colour.

The bulb on the eleventh landing of Harrow House had gone dark the winter the lift broke down, and for three months nobody on the estate would say whose job it was to change it. The council sent a letter. The lads from the car park wedged a brick under the stairwell door. Then the starlings came, a few at first and then hundreds, settling on the railings at dusk and lifting all together like a sheet shaken out over a line.

Nell Garrity, who was seventy-eight and had lived on eleven since before the blocks were painted, climbed the stairs one evening with a stepladder she was not supposed to carry. She had a bulb in her coat pocket, warm from her hand. The stairwell smelled of damp plaster and somebody's frying onions. At the top she stood on the third rung, twisted the old glass out, and felt the socket hum against her fingers as if it remembered her.
When the new bulb caught, the filament came up slow, a loose gold knot of wire, and through the landing window the birds turned. They dropped from the railings in a black spill and came round the glass in loops, pressing against it as if they wanted in, or wanted to be seen. Nell watched until her knees complained. Then she went down the stairs with one hand on the wall, counting the landings the way her mother had taught her to count the beads.
Nobody on eleven ever asked who had fixed it. The next winter, when the bulb blew again, a boy from fourteen came up with a torch and a spare in his jacket pocket, and he said his nan had told him where the ladder was kept. Below, the starlings held their hour over the car park, and the light on the landing stayed on.
