Go live script lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten script design reading go live, with the words joined by a long, looping flourish on the left and a trailing stroke on the right. The linework is fine and even, with dark ink on a pale, plain background. The composition is centred and uncluttered, with the lettering sitting slightly above the middle of the frame.

Your father's boots are still by the back door, Tom, and I have stopped pretending they will be needed. The Margaret Ellen went out at four with the ebb, and Ruth from the net loft says the glass is falling, so I am writing this on the back of the chandlery bill because the kettle has boiled twice and I have forgotten the tea every time.

You asked me in your last letter whether you should take the berth on the Reliance out of Lerwick, the bigger boat with the longer seasons and the better money. I didn't answer you properly. I kept thinking about the card that hung above the sink in your gran's kitchen, the one with two words on it in her pencil, slanting uphill like she was in a hurry to be somewhere. She said it was the only instruction she'd ever given anyone that was worth following, and she never once explained it, which is how I knew she meant it.

So here is my answer, and it isn't the one you're expecting. Go. Take the Reliance. Eat the bad mutton pies in Lerwick and write and tell me they're bad. Learn the names of the stars from a man who has rounded Muckle Flugga more times than he can count. Come home when you want to, and not before, and don't let your cousin tell you that a wave on the other side of the Pentland Firth is any less your own than one off Seahouses.

The boots can stay where they are. I'll sweep the step and leave the porch light on, which is what harbour women do, and it isn't waiting, whatever Ruth says. Mind the weather. Mind your hands. Mum
