Nobody at the Tallow Street theatre liked Ida Marrow's cards, but the stagehands kept them anyway. Every night before the doors opened, she sat in the box above the prompt desk with a fountain pen and a stack of postcards, and on each one she wrote two words in the same loose hand. Go. Live. The full stops were her habit, she said, so the words would have somewhere to rest.

Her nephew Tomas asked her once what the cards were for. She told him the city had too many people waiting for someone to say it was time, and she was only the one who did the saying. He thought she was being odd, which she was, and he took a few home to light the stove with.

The winter the trams stopped running, the theatre lost its lead singer, a girl who had frozen in the wings with the curtain already up. The house lights were dimming and the band had begun the overture a second time. Ida came down the ladder faster than anyone had seen her move, pressed a card into the girl's palm, and said nothing at all.

The girl read it, folded it into her glove, and walked out under the lamps. The audience heard her before they saw her. Afterwards nobody asked what the card said, and Ida never told them. Tomas found the stack later, every card still there except one, which lay on the desk with only its two full stops, waiting for someone brave enough to fill it in.
