Go the distance script and lightning bolt on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words go the distance in cursive script, set above a thin-lined circle. Inside the circle are two curled scroll shapes and a central lightning bolt. The linework is clean and even, and the design is in black ink with no shading, on a forearm photographed head-on under soft indoor light.

The wax seal had cracked inside my sash before I reached the milestone, and the rain came sideways off the Saronic water as I dropped my cloak on the stones. Master Lysandros had given me the courier's oath at dawn: the tablet reaches Corinth by the second hour, and no runner who stops for weather is trusted with another. I knotted my sandals tighter and counted the stadia by the markers.

The road climbed past olive terraces where the shepherds had already kindled their braziers. Halfway to the pass, a bolt struck the ridge ahead, white and loud, and the goats scattered down the scree. For a moment the whole valley stood still in that brightness, and I saw the two curled crests of cloud rolling over the summit like the tops of a ram's horns. I did not stop. My legs had learned the rhythm of the road, and the tablet knocked against my ribs with every stride.
At the Corinth gate the watchman took the tablet and studied my face before he studied the seal. "You are soaked to the bone," he said. "Sit." I told him I could not sit until the message was delivered. He laughed and said that was what every runner says just before he falls asleep on the step.
The tablet held only a grain measure and a date, nothing that would move a city. I walked home at dawn along the same road, and the storm had left a black scorch on the ridge, a neat curl burned into the rock where the bolt had landed. I stopped to look at it for longer than I should have, and then I kept walking.
