Smiley face with X eyes on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black outline of a circular smiley face with two X-shaped eyes and a wide smile with the tongue sticking out, sitting on the forearm. The linework is bold and even with no shading, and the lines are solid and consistent. The image is taken close up on skin with a neutral background, and a small partial mark is visible at the bottom edge.

Nobody in Ferrin House could say who first painted the face inside the lift, only that it had been there longer than the damp. It was a plain ring with two crosses for eyes and a wide grin, the tongue poked out at one corner, and on bad mornings the tenants pressed the button for the sixth floor just to be looked at by it.

Tomasz Rekowski did not believe any of that. He had a bad knee, a worse temper and a drawer of unpaid post, and on the Tuesday the lift carried him past the ninth floor into a corridor that smelled of cut grass. At the far end sat an old man on a kitchen stool, cap pulled low, shelling peas into a bowl. "You owe the face," the old man said. "Everyone who slams that button owes it a smile."

Tomasz offered to pay in cash. The old man shook his head and tipped a pea pod at the wall, where a painted face was staring back from a door that had not been there a minute before. "Not money. Give it something you were going to keep." So Tomasz took out the council letter that said he would be moved to a quieter block, and he watched it curl into the grass and vanish.

The lift came back at once and let him out on the ground floor. When he looked up, the crosses on the wall had gone, and the face was simply smiling, which he took to mean the debt was settled. He stayed where he was, and every morning after that he pressed the button for the sixth floor and nodded at it on the way up.
