Thirty-one years he taught maths at the comprehensive by the ring road, and he still couldn't leave a sum alone. That's a greater-than, he said, all mouth. The big number gets the open jaws and the small one gets pointed at. He drew it in the air with one finger. Put God on the hungry side, he said, and everything else, the highs and the lows, is just what's sitting at the bottom of the sum.

At the top the roof door was propped with a brick, and the whole city lay below in its orange smudge, the ring road a ribbon of headlights. He set the bags down and breathed for a while. Then the lift pinged behind us, mended at last by someone who'd been paid to care. He stepped in first, pressed G, and watched the numbers fall without once looking back at the stairs.
