Minimal line G chevron and V design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows four simple black characters drawn in thin, even lines: a G, a right-pointing chevron, an upward peak, and a V. The linework is clean and uniform with no shading. The design sits centrally on a plain white background with no colour or other elements.

Tuesday, gone two, and the canal has stopped sulking. From the lock-keeper's hut I can see the lamp on Fenwick Street bridge still burning, which means Ada has been along with the oil. We have a shorthand for the bridges, scratched on the backs of tide tables since we were nine. The G is for the gate, the chevron for the way the water runs off it, the peak for the lamp above, and the V for the way home. Nobody else in the city could read it, which was the point.

Tonight the marks were waiting for me on the hut's lintel, chalked small and neat, as if she had stood on the coping to reach them. I stood there longer than I should have, turning the cold chalk dust between my fingers. The chevron pointed towards the river, the way the barges go, and not back towards the Pennine road where she was supposed to be. I took that as her telling me the gate was open and I was not to wait up for her.
By the time I reached the bridge the lamp had been trimmed so high it nearly scorched the iron. Under it, on the parapet, someone had left a single shilling in the groove where the lamplighter always set his pipe. Nothing else. No note, no second mark, only the coin, dull and warm from the glass.
I chalked the four marks back onto the stone, just as she had shown me, and walked home along the towpath with the shilling in my pocket. The water kept its own counsel all the way to the lock.
