Dear Win,

The ferry didn't go out again today, so I have had time to think about Dad's hand. You remember how he signed the cheques for the chapel roof, slanting everything forward as if the words were late for something. Mr Pryce at the bank has kept one, framed, behind the counter, and he showed it to me on Tuesday as if it were a photograph of the Queen.

I went down to Harbour Row this morning to see whether the Mary Ellen had come through the squall. She had, with a split in her foresail and Owen Lloyd swearing at the wheel, bless him. Nobody drowned. Mrs Gwynne from the shop stood on the quay with her shawl over her head and cried into her gloves, saying it was grace, pure grace, and I said nothing, because I was thinking about the paint on the boat's hull, which is peeling in the exact shape of a hand.

Anyway, I have decided what to do with the spare shilling you sent. I am going to the stationer's in Carmarthen to buy a pen with a nib fine enough to write the way Dad did, the words loose and a little uneven, with one long stroke at the start. I will copy out the line he kept pinned above the sink, I am saved by His Grace, and see whether I can make it sit right on the page. It is not a sermon. It is only a sentence that kept him steady the winter the chapel roof came in.

Write soon. Tell Tom the hens are laying again.

Love, Margaret
