Grace in flowing script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word grace written in flowing, cursive script in solid black ink on a plain white background. The strokes vary in thickness, with thick downstrokes and fine hairline entry and exit strokes, suggesting a brush or pen calligraphy style. The single word is centred in the frame with generous white space around it, and no colour or shading is present.

Tomasz had spent three evenings on the same word, pinning lining paper across the fourteenth-floor landing of Brindley Tower and filling sheet after sheet with grace until the bulb above him buzzed and he could no longer see the ink. Every attempt came out stiff. The old board in the entrance hall had been painted by a man called Walter Pryce, who had signwritten half the shopfronts in the city before his hands gave out, and the council wanted it matched before the residents' meeting on Friday.

Mrs Achebe, who had lived on the eleventh floor since the block opened, came up on the fourth night with a flask of tea and stood over the paper. "He never pressed hard on the way in," she said. "You could see him lift the brush, and the line just kept going, thinner and thinner, as if it didn't want to stop."
Tomasz tried it. He loaded the brush, touched the paper so lightly the first stroke was almost nothing, then let the weight settle onto the downstroke of the g and waited for the moment to release. The tail ran off the page and onto the wall beside the window.
"That's him," she said, and went back down the stairs without waiting for an answer.
On Friday the board went up in the hall, the letters leaning forward as if someone were walking towards the lifts. Tomasz stood at the back of the meeting and watched the residents read it, and nobody mentioned the paint. Mrs Achebe only nodded at the final e, whose tail ran almost to the edge of the board and stopped there, as though it had been told where to end.
